GIG THEATRE

Gig Theatre. It's a fresh name in an otherwise ancient art form. Combining stand-up comedy, music gigs and semi-autobiographical theatre, this relatively new performance style is definitely a great way of working around contemporary issues surrounding limitation of venue space to name just one. It's a highly flexible art form, perfect for the audience member who might otherwise feel out-of-place at a grand theatre venue, prefering a night in at their local pub instead.

It's also perfect for events like Edinburgh Fringe Festival where venues are cramped and stages minimal. If you've got a microphone and a bit of space for instruments, you're good to go.

Gig Theatre can be as charming as an intimate music performance, funny and outgoing as a stand-up show and as dramatic as a play. If you're a fan of the one person autobiographical tragicomedies so often seen in modern British theatre then this is essentially a development of that.

The one pictured here, Standing Too Close On Our Own In The Dark was performed on January 15th by Hull University graduate theatre company Just Club, a three-man company seeking to bridge the gap betwen Hull's two well developed evening excursions for young artists, theatre and open-mic gigs. They brought along with them a series of support acts that ranged from a local first-time stand-up act to one of the brightest young talents in the British music scene. The night's main event saw many of the audience leaving with tears in their eyes, the powerful poetry and strong vocals proving to be an instant hit. Just club now see themselves with upcoming shows in several cities and including Sheffield and Nottingham. Keep an eye out for the bright young future these lads surely have ahead of them.
